Ministry of Consolation
The members of this ministry reach out to parishioners who have just suffered the loss of a loved one. It is a particularly vulnerable
time for the grieving families.
The personal contact, warmth and outreach offered to these families is a great comfort to them.
Each team consists of a companion, greeters and cake bakers. The companion meets with the family
to assist them in planning for the funeral Mass. The family may choose scripture readings and hymns as well as participate in the Mass in other ways. On the day of the funeral Mass, the greeters invite people in, welcome them to our parish, assist them with seating and any other questions they may have.
In general they assist the companion in whatever way possible to ensure a smooth prayerful celebration of liturgy. The cake-baker is responsible
for delivering their cake to the home of the family as soon as possible. A note provided by the parish, expressing condolences and support of the parish family accompanies the cake. This is simply a first contact and no in-depth presence or conversation would be expected of this minister.
This is truly a rewarding ministry. We are doing what Jesus has asked His Church to do - we are coming together as a parish family to comfort those who mourn. We are in need of people to join us as cake bakers, greeters or companions. We have teams ready to help you, you won't be alone. There is also training available from the Diocese. If you are interested please contact the rectory at: 516-352-0146.
"Blessed are they who mourn, for they will be comforted."
